Big data will support farmers in producing more food using less energy. Through collecting data from weather, soil, and crops, farmers have the opportunity to identify the optimal timing for planting and harvesting. This leads to more efficient production of healthy crops available on the market and loss prevention.

Farmers with data can find out which parts of their property are the ones that require more water or fertilizer. This method is known as precision farming. It is the most resource-efficient way of saving money and protecting the environment by reducing the use of chemicals.

At the same time, big data is one of the best tools in forecasting the potential issues like pest infestations or unexpected weather. Early warning gives farmers the possibility of timely intervention and thus crop protection. As a result, food safety will be guaranteed for everyone, along with a stable supply.

Big data will also be the medium that links farms with markets in the future. Producers will be conversant with what kind of product is in high demand in particular geographical areas for them to sell even at a better price. This is a win-win situation since it helps them earn more and reduce food waste.
