Future applications of big data (7)
Smart Cities
Big data will definitely have a strong impact on the development of smart cities. A smart city is a city that uses digitized information to make the lives of its inhabitants more comfortable. It is a tremendous help for traffic management, and the use of energy, waste, and water more efficiently. That means greener and safer cities.
Smart city traffic lights will be able to harness the power of big data to minimize traffic congestion. Cameras and sensors will continuously gather traffic data and change light timing accordingly. As a result, cars will use less time to go and pollution will be reduced due to no long waits.
In a similar vein, the system of garbage collection has the potential to reach a higher level of efficiency. Sensors fitted in trash bins will gather and send waste level information to the city. So it enables workers to empty only those bins, which are not void. Besides that, it gives clean air to the city by consuming less diesel for traversing.
On the other hand, safety will also be fundamentally improved as data will become available for efficient protection. The police can rely on this data to not only record past events but also to anticipate the potential places of occurrences of crimes. In this way, they can send officers where it is needed most and thus protect people better.
